What a Rottweiler asks of you every day
A fully grown male can weigh around 50 kg. Everything about daily life is shaped by that number.
- 61 to 68 cm
- Male height at the withers, ADRK standard
- 56 to 63 cm
- Female height at the withers
- About 50 kg
- Typical male weight in the standard
- About 42 kg
- Typical female weight
Size changes the ordinary things
A dog of this weight pulls a lead with real force, takes up a back seat and needs a vehicle, a vet and a boarding arrangement that can handle it. Plan the practical side before you plan anything else. Practise loose-lead walking while the dog is young enough that you can still control it comfortably.
A realistic routine
- Morning: a proper walk plus a few minutes of obedience practice, not just a trip to the yard.
- Midday: company or a rest period in a cool, quiet place.
- Evening: another walk and a calm training session.
- All day: a secure gate and fence, because a guardian that gets out is a liability.
Visitors, deliveries and the front door
The breed standard calls the dog self-assured and alert. In a family home that usually means the dog notices every arrival. Decide in advance how guests will be introduced, where the dog waits when the door opens and what cue means settle. Build that habit early and repeat it until it is dull.
Children and other animals
The AKC describes the Rottweiler as a gentle playmate and family protector that watches the outside world with self-assured reserve. A big dog that is gentle can still knock over a toddler, so supervise, and teach children how to treat the dog. Introduce other pets slowly.
Heat and heavy coats
A heavy black coat soaks up sun. Walk early or late in warm weather, offer shade and fresh water, and talk to your veterinarian about heat risk for your dog.
The time cost
Training never really ends. Budget an hour or more of attention every day, for the whole of the dog's life, and weigh that honestly against your work and travel.
Next, the paperwork side: housing, insurance and local rules.

Quick answers
How much exercise does a Rottweiler need?
Daily walking plus structured training is a sensible baseline. Ask your veterinarian to tailor it to the dog's age, joints and condition.
Can a Rottweiler live in an apartment?
It can work if the daily exercise and company are real and the building allows the breed. Confirm the lease first.
