Choosing a line
Working line or show line: reading the labels
The two phrases sound like official classes. They are shorthand, so your job is to find out what each seller means by them.
Shorthand, not a rulebook
Working line and show line are informal terms used between buyers and sellers. In general talk, working line points to parents chosen for drive, courage and trainability, while show line points to parents chosen for the look described in the breed standard. Neither phrase is a guarantee of temperament in a single puppy, and a seller can use either one loosely.
The breed standard itself covers both worlds. The ADRK standard describes a dog that is eager to work and also lays out height, build and the black coat with rich tan markings. A dog worth owning meets the standard in temperament as well as in looks.
Questions that cut through the label
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which registry are the papers from? | Each club publishes its own rules for breeding dogs. Read them rather than relying on a summary. |
| What have the parents done besides being bred? | Titles, working evaluations and show results are evidence. A sentence on a web page is not. |
| How do the parents behave around strangers? | You want steadiness. Ask to meet at least the dam, and watch her around people she does not know. |
| What health results are public? | Hips, elbows, heart, eyes and the JLPP DNA test are discussed on the health testing page. |
What an owner should expect from each approach
Drive-first breeding
- Tends to want a job and plenty of structured work
- Rewards an owner who enjoys training every day
- Can frustrate a household that wants a quiet shadow
Appearance-first breeding
- May suit a home that mainly wants a calm family guardian
- Still needs socialization and clear rules
- Check that temperament was tested, not assumed
These are general tendencies from how owners describe the two approaches. Individual dogs vary a great deal, which is why you meet the dog and read the paperwork.

Quick answers
Is a working line Rottweiler a better protection dog?
Not automatically. The label says something about what the parents were chosen for, not how a single dog will act. Evidence of steady temperament matters more than the phrase.
Can a show line Rottweiler be trained for protection?
Some can, if temperament is sound. A qualified professional should assess the individual dog.
